And from Max Lohrbach, here’s a couple images from “Faust in Hell”, which we performed at our Summer Benefit a few weeks ago – very, very cool…

Big, huge YEAH to Mike Carina for whipping up this lovely art for our benefit invite.  Give the man a couple hours and watch what he can do (and then let me muck it up with a background)…

Thanks, Mike.  And thanks to Andrew for his invaluable, unending, unswerving attention to detail, quality and brand integrity.

Faust Comics sneak peek

Take a look at the crazy-brilliant artwork coming in from the Faust Comics artists!

From the brains of Jessica Boire comes this little snapshot from “The Learned Masters”.  Female Faust and a pert little oni Mephistopheles.

And Joel Vollmer sends in these pages (in progress) from “Faust Summons Mephistopheles” – it’s action-packed alchemy!  This looks terrific and can’t wait to see more…

The full pieces won’t be online until September/October.  Until then, i’ll put up more little nibbles as they come in.

Fringe update

Posted in June of Arc posts on August 7, 2009 by ryan

Our first venture into the Minnesota Fringe Festival is winding up to be a definitive success.  Sold out shows and tons of great word of mouth have assured Sandbox a positive experience at the Fringe.

Check out the (vastly adoring) audience reviews here.  And, by the way, we welcome thumbs up and encourage thumbs down reviews.  This is part of the dialogue with our audience.  It’s no good for us to sit and talk to a dark house for 45 minutes if we never hear what they’re thinking.  And besides, we do work that’s not supposed to be everyone’s taste.  If everyone loved our shows, we’re not pushing ourselves hard enough.

So bring on the kudos and shovel up the mud.  We love it.

Bat of Minerva interview

Posted in Random Otherness from the Sandbox on July 27, 2009 by ryan

Oh my.

Ryan and Heather are in front of the camera for Bat of Minerva, a local wide-ranging interview show.

Here we talk about Sandbox, a bit about process, a bit about bathtubs and generally look a bit uncomfortable and/or flamboyant.

The full-length episode (with more fidgeting and more gesticulating) will air at some point at midnight. We’ll let you know when it airs so you have time to pop the corn and chill the beers.

murnau’s faust

Posted in .faust posts on July 13, 2009 by ryan

Here’s a couple photos from F.W. Murnau’s 1926 Faust silent film.  We’r not going to be referencing it much directly, but it’s a pretty great flick.  I’ll probably be talking about it…

The images that stick out the most are of the prologue and epilogue, which takes place as a conversation between heaven and hell.  These pics are from the prologue, where we see the devil descending on the town.  It was crazy advanced for the day and still very cool.

I think it’s important to know the frame of reference our audiences will be coming in to the theatre with.  We should be conscious about any connections or allusions we make – intentionally or otherwise – to any other Faustian stories out there.

So soak it all in, folks!
